Did Costa Rica humidity wreaked my MacBook Pro?

I am working decades with my MacBooks, never had any Problems.

Since a couple of years I spend around 6 months a year in Costa Rica, living at the beach, around 100 meters from the shore, no AC. But I treat my stuff really careful So the first FUC**G issue started 1 1/2 years ago, my mb 15 waked up very slowly, till one day! So I went to an apple store, they told me liquids on the MB, no way!So at the end I buried my MacBook after 3 1/2 Years of work. I bought a new 15er and treated it like an raw egg.

Today, after 1 1/2 years it stopped working, no words! I was so smart and got an special insurance for liquids. But come on, thats not a solution, I am working with this tools and I need it!

So is there any solution to get that bastard work more than 1 1/2 years?

I did some research and I am playing with the idea to get an Thinkpad, people are really happy with it. But the thing is I am absolutely not keen on Windows, unix is no option either, no Software for my Work as Graphic Designer

Living in Costa Rica’s high humidity environment, you do need to be careful, not matter what computer you have.

The issue is when you let your system rest it gets cold enough moisture will collect on the cold metal surfaces. So every night your system gets wet!

So how do you over come this?

Setting up a warm storage bin to keep the system warm enough so the moisture doesn’t condense out of the air.

I’ve had to setup a few for some scientist. We used a heavy cooler which we installed a heating pad like this one Sunbeam Moist / Dry Heat Heating Pad, Light Blue. You’ll need to drill a hole to feed the cords through. So every night after you’ve shut the system down place your system into the cooler onto of the heating pad as the lowest setting (I used a few pieces of 2” square sticks to keep the system from direct contact with the blanket. Plug in the power cord if you need to recharge the battery that should do it. You might want to add a digital oven thermometer so you can monitor the internal cases temp.

Thanks for sharing your solution, are the scientists still happy?

Its not really cold in the night at my place Costa Rica, around 25 degrees celsius.

I guess in my case its different I figured out two things,

1. There is so much salt in the air, due to the ocean.

2. The air intakes of the faster MacBook pros are much bigger than the previous.

So I think the corrosion/rust whatever which destroys that thing from inside comes from the salt.

Maybe you have any ideas about that, too.

What about covering the air intakes with a filter, maybe a fabric which filters the salt out of the air?

The key is the dew point! As an example a can of soda that's at room temp at night can have dew on it by the morning. Test it out!

Yes! Salt air (mist) is also not good for your system. Are you near rock breakers or have lots of breaking waves on the beach? The winds can push the air about a half mile. As an example I live in Boston quite close to the harbor which gives us a protected area so we have very little breaking waves so the air is not that salty. I have yet to see any salt corrosion on my gear or customers who's gear I fix that could be from the salt air.

The scientists traveled to Chile to the Antofagasta & Atacama telescopes facing both high humidity and cold temps in their travels.

Yes there is pretty much salt mist in the air, I checked with a flashlight in the night.

I live around 50 meters from breaking waves.

@asiaton - A metal can or a glass glass (not plastic). Put a dry paper towel on the table for the can/glass

Hey Dan,

Got the result from last night and one glass glass of water, nothing no drops, no condensation outside nor inside on the top of the glass and nothing on the paper where the glass was placed.

bomer, could have been so easy, so I gonna start brainstorming and research for the salt mist issue.

But anyway one thing we know now its not condensation water.
