My charger is plugged in but my laptop only charges some of the time

For some reason my laptop isn’t charging even though my charger is plugged in. I have checked the charging cord and there is input and output in the charger. Sometimes i have to move my charger around when its plugged in so that my laptop charges. I dont know if the problem is with the cord( the cord seems fine to me ) or with the laptop. Can someone help please? Thank you.

Hi @asadishere ,

You may have a faulty DC-In jack (supplier example only to show what it looks like and the cost of the part) There are other suppliers that may suit you better. Just search for Acer Aspire 3 A315-21 DC-In jack to get results.

Sometimes the centre pin of the DC-In jack breaks loose internally from its’ connection and can cause an intermittent connection problem. It cannot be repaired, it has to be replaced

Here’s a video that shows how to fix an overheating problem in your model laptop. I realize that this is not the problem with your laptop but the video is useful as it shows how to open the laptop so that the DC-In jack can be disconnected from the motherboard and the wires tested for continuity, from the jack to the cable plug connector using an Ohmmeter, to prove whether it is faulty or not.

Be sure to disconnect the main battery from the motherboard as soon as you can access the battery connector.

It is always advisable to disconnect the battery whenever you’re working inside a laptop. There is always power available at various points on the motherboard even if the laptop is switched off. You don’t want to accidentally slip when using any metal tools inside the laptop, as this may cause electrical problems. The Power button is not a power isolating button. You don’t have to remove the battery, simply disconnect it.

Remember to reconnect the battery as late as possible when closing the laptop for the last time

Hi, thank you for your reply,

I checked the power in the dc jack and there seems to be no issue with the current in there. But what works is that when i move my charging cord around a bit from the adapter than my laptop starts charging. So is the problem with the dc jack or is it with my charger even though the charger has no issue with the current?

Hi,

Where are you holding the charger plug when you're moving it around in the jack?

If by the plug itself it may be the jack, if by the cord it may be the plug.

Try measuring the voltage at the end of the plug and flex the cable where it enters the plug or leaves the adapter to see if the voltage comes and goes. If it moves it may be the cable connection at whichever end causesit to disappear. If it stays steady then perhaps it is the jack and you would need to test this.

i am moving the cord around as soon as it leaves the adapter. But i dont see any damage on the cord at that place.

@asadishere ,

The damage may not be visible as it is the wires that may be fractured and they are covered by the cable insulation. That is why you need to use a Voltmeter to measure the voltage at the plug connector or if you haven't got a voltmeter hold the plug firmly while it is inserted into the laptop charge port and making sure that the plug doesn't move at all as you don't want the charge port to move, flex the cable either at the adapter end of the plug end and check if the laptop charge light comes on or off. Obviously the adapter has to be switched on.

yeah when i flexed the cable the charging light did come on and started charging the laptop.
