Swapping logicboards and compatibility between mid 2015 and late 2015?

I have a 27” Imac mid 2015 and I want to swap its logic board with one from the late 2015 iMac.

Are these logic boards compatible?

Will the late 2015 logic board fit the case of mid 2015? Its conectors are in the same place of the mid 2015 logic board?

Will all of the mid 2015 logic board components (processors, GPU, SSD, etc..) will fit and work properly in the late 2015 logic board?

Also is the mid 2015 power supply the same as the late 2015?

What is your reason in swapping out the logic boards?

The systems firmware (EFI) won't support the others CPU's.

iMac15,1 - Haswell CPU’s

iMac17,1 - Skylake CPU’s

Hi Dan, because I have upgraded the imac and SSD is slow speed because mid 2015 has PCIe x2 only. Late 2015 has PCIe X4 so speeds would be much better and higher.

Swapping logicboards with all componentes would affect the campatibility? I mean I would remove the mid 2015 logicboard and its components and swap it with a late 2015 logic board with its components.

From the images above the bolts seem in the right place to fit in the mid2015 case and the connectors are in the same place to be plugged. The only visible difference is the wifi card that is slightly placed in the right near the right speaker but that would fit as well i suppose.

Sadly you can’t migrate most of the parts over. You’ll need to put in the required Skylake CPU, the display, the AirPort board and the antenna cable harness.

I really think its cheaper to just get the better system if you really think the PCIe x2 blade SSD interface is holding you back.

To be honest I don’t think that’s it! Your SSD’s size and your systems configuration is more likely what you need to focus in on.

So tell us what you have for drives as well as your current CPU’s specs.

I have upgraded my mid 2015 with an original 128GB Apple SSD. The speeds reached average 550w-600r MB/s , Then. I tried to stick a Samsung EVO Plus SSD with an adapter and I got speeds of 650w-800r MB/s.

The same SSD externally gets 500w-550r MB/s USB 3.0.

Its not worth to upgrade this iMac to a SSD because you will get the same average speed internally or externally.

The original apple SSD blade was the one that got slower speed results.

If I knew that my logicboard had only a PCI x2 with a 500MB/s speed limit I would not upgrade my iMac as I did. I would stick with the external SSD drive as I was using. I thought upgrading I would be getting higher speeds...

Now because I have spent some in the upgrade I want to go through all the way to speed my system. Buying a new one is not an option because they are very expensive.

I am thinking just to buy a complete used late 2015 logicboard and simply replace the mid for the late 2015 and connect all cables as you told me and believe that it will work!

I never said it would work!

What I said is you would need to replace other parts as well which then make this an impractical exercise!

I also said you maybe over focused on the PCIe interface, Which based on your response you are!

Spend some time reading these:

Thunderbolt Iinterface

As you can see the Thunderbolt2 port offers much faster I/O over the USB-A connection you are using with the external SSD.

To put this into perspective I have a 2013 Mac Pro with a PCIe 2.0 x2 SSD (my boot drive and Apps) and use a Thunderbolt2 RAID drive which gets me around 4 Gb/s! As my data drive.

So the better direction is sticking with the original Apple PCIe SSD and then get a TB2 RAID box loaded with either 2.5" SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) SSD's or M.2 PCI/NVMe blade SSD's (these are very different boxes). Thats what I would do for video, music or even photo work.

Hey Dan keep cool! The fault is mine.. i should have done more research in this iMac subjects.. you are coll as you are here to help people like me!! For that I thank you soo much!

Your setup seems ok to me...

Now I have a TB2 dock that I bought before and that I could use. I remember to check the speed of the external SSD through TB2 dock and was lower than the USB 3.0 connection..

Anyway I will probably do as you tell me and am going to buy a TB2 Raid box. Do you know a good one not so expensive?

The Raid box is used to store files and the 128GB apple SSD starts the iMac true?

Let me know the correct configuration you have so I can do it as well.

Just for a note the Samsung SSD gets very hot and the system made one waring because it was 82 degrees Celcius and max is 85...

@papaformigas - I'm cool! AC is running! ;-}

OK so just put things back together with the original Apple blade SSD installed. If needed reformat the drive with a fresh copy of macOS. Now install your apps onto the drive, Ideally you want to have 1/3 of the drive unused! So keep that in mind, the reason for this is to give the OS some elbow room for virtual RAM and cache as well as your apps which use caching and scratch space. Other less needed apps can be installed on a second internal drive if you must (SSD or HDD via the SATA port)

After getting your RAID box just hook it up as outlined in the manual that came with it. It will show up as an external drive. setup the drive with your data files and when you open your app from within the open file window locate the drive and the sub folder you are planing on using as the folder with the given project our other organizational method you are using. Nothing special here.

For my needs I use Year and then Project folders I then create Revision folders as needed. I also use aliases based on the client held under their name folder.

OK what do you think abou this raid box? Its from WD and its not too expensive for me:

Or this one (I would need to buy also a TB3 to TV3 apple adaptor and a TB2 cable):
