Why does my monitor lose signal when gaming?

So when I’m gaming, my monitor loses signal however my pc keeps running. In order to fix the problem I have to restart my PC. I have tried replacing my GPU and PSU so it’s a pretty good assumption that it isn’t one of these two components causing the issue. Also to note, this happens more often when I am running a more powerful game, and it also happens more often on a hot day - to suggest that the stem of the problem is something to do with overheating. This problem has been ongoing for a long time so any help would be much appreciated.

@anjas what make and model GPU are you using and what game are you having issues with? You update your BIOS etc?

I have the same problem

Most likely a motherboard issue

But for me personally

It probably had to do with my cpu overheating

Because whenever i take the side panel off

The problem stops

If you have solved the issue

Perhaps you could enlighten me on what exactly caused it for you and how you fixed it

Hi @anjas

What is the make and model number of the motherboard if a custom build or the make and model number of the desktop if a proprietary brand?

How old is it?

If more than say 4 years have you refreshed the CPU thermal paste and cleaned the CPU fan of any dust etc? Also is the case fan working OK and clean?

How much RAM is installed? If insufficient for gaming it puts pressure on the CPU which drives up the temperature.

I have a MSI B450 tomahawk - the motherboard is around 1 year old, as are the other parts.

The case fans are working okay, I recently removed all the dust to see if that would fix the issue however it didn't.

I have 16GB of DDR4 RAM so I don't think that is the issue either.

Hi Anjas, Have you run a memory test?

@anjas

Here's the support page for the motherboard so thatyou can check if the BIOS is the latest version and also if you select "Compatibility" under Product Service you can verify the CPU and RAM just in case of any doubts.

Check in Event Viewer for any Critical, Error or Warning events that occurred at the same time as the display stopped during gaming. If any there at the same time then it may give a clue as to what is happening.

To get to Event Viewer, right click on the Windows Start button on the left side of the Taskbar and select the Event Viewer link

The user manual mentions a Gaming App on p.65 which may be useful as it monitors the CPU and GPU which may give a clue as well especially if it works when the display is off. I don't know how it works as I don't have a MSI board

There's nothing in event viewer that indicates any reason for the crashing. I have also updated my BIOS to be the most recent version however this has not fixed the problem.

Additionally, I have run a memory test and everything came out fine
