The Disc tray hasn’t been opening properly for a few months now and I have had to put duct tape on it to open and close it but before that, it would not open if there wasn’t a disc inside which is very strange and I had to pry it open multiple times but it still reads discs fine. I have also tried using the Xbox vertically but then even with a disc the tray won’t open

I would try replacing the rubber band or at least try cleaning it. If that fails, I would try to see if you can find a new top cover for the drive, because occasionally the magnet that holds the disc in prevents it from opening properly.

So to answer the common question, Yes this is a common thing on X-Box 360's. It maybe because of the belt in the drives opening mechanism. It either A, have been bumped and moved out of place or B it could be perished and need replacing. If you need any help on how to get to the DVD drive heres a link of a guide:

Yes the Guide only gets to the drive itself so you will need to disassemble the drive itself to get to the belt or the problem part. I unfortunately can't find a guide on that but if I do I will link it
