Display removal after new screen just fitted. Any tips? Tape sticky!

I recently upgraded a late 2014 iMac 27in with a new OWC Aura SSD blade and a 6TB secondary hard drive. Everything has been fine for months but now it won’t turn on - or it will because I can hear and feel the fan.

But nothing appears on the screen and it won’t display to my Thunderbolt Display either. I’ve done the standard SMC reset etc and even tried to start it from the internet. Is this a logic board failure?

If so how can I remove the display for a second time without cracking it? The Fixit screen tapes are super sticky and the cutting wheel seems to just push the tapes in rather than cut through the foam core. Using the plastic cards also from Fixit is super scary because the glass is just stuck firm.

What do you guys recommend to get this out? I was thinking of softening the glue with a hairdryer or using some kind of solvent to ease the process. I’m sure one of you must’ve tackled this issue before! Thanks for any helpful advice guys… :)

It can be scary! As you don’t want to damage your display.

I’m surprised you are encountering an issue here as the cut tapes should split as the foam core is designed so it can break apart.

What I’ve also faced is people using Tesa tape which doesn’t have a foam core and is a bear to get the display off when its used. I charge an additional $80 if I encounter that as it takes me a good 45 mins to an hour extra to get the display off. OK, so how do I do it when the wrong adhesive is used? Or, in your case over sticky.

Lets look at a similar technique Using feathers and wedges While you may laugh how a stone cutter splits a stone into clean slabs. The basic idea is sound here as well! Instead of feathers and wedges we will need to use a ton of picks and cards.

We need to go slow and it’s not going deep its creating and maintaining a gap thats the key! I use about eight cards and sixteen picks to do the job

I use Blue masking tape to hold the edges as I go around. Remember once you have a gap you want to enlarge it ,you don’t want a wide gap as the stress can damage the display! Its the linear gap we need to create. Once the top is loose, slowly tilt the display forward to release the bottom edge.

Make sure you’ve cleaned off the old adhesive and tape so the surfaces are clean. Don’t lift the black tape! I use Goof Off and reagent grade 90% isopropyl alcohol as I don’t want any junk left which interferes with the tapes adhesion.

I use a heat gun to warm the case and the glass (not hot, warm!) and I use a rubber J roller to help press the glass down around the edge as Apple recommends.
