I want to strip the Chrome OS from my Chromebook 2 and replace it

Ok so I have been looking to do this project for a little while. The chromebook 2 model I’m using has been depreciated for about 2 years now by google. It is still functional and i really do enjoy using it, and would like to use it to learn more about computing and coding in general so I’m putting myself to the project of removing the existing OS from the device and replacing it with a different OS, preferably Linux. I understand I could potentially destroy this device, that’s not an issue. I just would like to do it correctly, or as informationally beneficial as possible. I have seen a previous walk-through which seemed to be done using a Chromebook 3. I don’t know if the hardware setup is the same, and so I was hoping to come to the forums for more advice.

This isn’t officially supported. If you want to install Microsoft Windows 10, you’ll have to install a replacement BIOS for your Chromebook. This will allow you to boot and install Windows. The replacement BIOS can only be installed on Chromebook models that it supports though.

Or if you still want to install Linux instead: https://itsfoss.com/install-linux-chrome...

I followed the steps installing ubuntu with crouton in my chromebook 2 since it falls between the hardware switch and OS switch for Linux/dev mode. I had zero problem going through the steps, created username and password, entered crouton shell. Closed chromebook and opened next day, replacing chrome os and removing from dev mode, erasing crouton file.

I have since power-washed the chromebook several times and reentered dev mode, but cannot download ubuntu crouton steps again. Immediately after a powerwash I will get the warning with the three list items, but then I get the error

"sh: 0: Can't open ~/Downloads/crouton"

I can't seem to erase completely the hard drive I guess, and it still recognize those files as present maybe? Even though the instructions (crouton file) for the files are gone?

@paddymonahan To fix the crouton error, please kindly check out at https://www.gitmemory.com/issue/dnschnei...

@v3nuo I was partially successful in installing crouton on my chromebook 2, but have not been able to get any kind of interface or GUI to work. I installed a couple of programs like ViM and okular, but can't get the interface of okular to open. I also was successful installing nano editor, but trying to issue the command "startgnome" blanks the screen and returns an error block that's too long to share here, but some key elements I think are pertinent are:

_XSERVTransmkdir: ERROR: euid != 0,directory /tmp/.X11-unix will not be created.

MESA-LOADER: failed to retrieve device information

gbm: failed to open any driver (search paths /usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/dri:${ORIGIN}/dri:/usr/lib/dri)

gbm: Last dlopen error: /usr/lib/dri/exynos_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

failed to load driver: exynos

EGL_MESA_drm_image required.

(EE) Fatal server error:

(EE) AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 1

@v3nuo Also, couldn't I replace the BIOS with UEFI then install debian or linux mint or kali from a USB boot?

If it still matters: mrchromebox.tech. So far, I've converted my Lenovo Chromebook to Ubuntu (with firmware conversion) and an Asus Chromebox i7 now running Windows.....Best site I've seen to step through the conversion process.... Good luck!!!
