Fan spins for roughly 5 seconds and keeps restarting. Short somewhere?

Hi guys,

I have a MacBook mid 2012 logic board 820-3024

The fan spins when the power adapter is connected then keeps restarting the fan spin process after about 5-6 seconds. I’m convinced there is a short some where; I have the schematic heat gun multi meter iron etc so am ready to start diagnosing & fixing it.

Anybody come across this issue ?

Where abouts should I start measuring resistance values etc.

I know old turkey is good with this stuff. Any help will be greatly appreciated :)

I might even buy you a beer !! Haha

PS - MAGSAFE ADAPTER LIGHT STAYS GREEN

Update (08/15/2021)

Board is 820-3023-A… my bad

What happens when you remove the SSD?

Follow this guide MacBook Air 11" Mid 2011 Solid-State Drive Replacement to take it out. Does it now boot up with a flashing Question Mark in a folder icon?

Hi mate,

Removed all peripherals mousepad speakers ssd etc ..

I/O board is good. Backlight fuse good.

It’s a power issue for sure.

Thank you for your reply :)

Really ? No diagnosing to find the short ? Do you have experience in logic board fault finding ?

@Nathan Pelling - Board level diagnostics is not something you can do remotely. It would be like a doctor trying to guide someone remotely doing brain surgery!

Then you need to look at the costs, a 1.6GHz i5 4GB board can be gotten for $230 USD (Apple P/N 661-6071) which in the end would be cheaper!
