Are these parts compatible for the Dell Inspiron 15-3531?

I know it’s a bit hilarious to use a laptop this out of date in almost 2022, but I can’t help but pity my old childhood laptop..plus it’s the only option I have for using a Windows OS right now (sad, I know). I’ve been looking online both on Dell’s actual site and places like Best Buy, but cannot find parts that seem to be compatible without resorting to a gamble like Amazon. It currently runs Windows 10, but not by choice.

I need these parts the most as of 9/5/21:
-A new battery (current one is definitely dead)
-Charger/power adaptor (original one is missing, currently borrowing a friend’s)
-Wifi card (despite troubleshooting in multiple ways, it is unable to connect to wifi or mobile hotspot, I will try ethernet when I have access to it)

These are the closest I can seem to find in terms of compatibility:
-Battery
-Charger
-Wi-fi card (none found at the moment)

Would the above parts linked work for this particular laptop model, and if so, where would be an ideal place to seek repair assistance for it? If not, is there a reputable site that sells compatible parts, as I’ve already checked iFixit’s store inventory and they only provide chargers for the 15-3000 series, which did not list this model as being compatible.

I have also already downloaded both the user guide and service guide to the Dell Inspiron 15-3531 laptops in preparation, having read them before posting this.

Hi @allisonlane ,

Find the model or part number that should be printed on all of the parts you need and then search online using the model (or part) number only to hopefully find suppliers. The parts may be common to other Dell products as well.

What is the status of the WLAN network adapter as shown in Device Manager?

Find the WLAN adapter in Device Manager > Network Adapters > click on the “>” symbol to the left of the category to expand the list > right click on the Dell 1506 adapter entry > Properties > General tab > device status box.

Does it say that “this device is working properly”?

Unfortunately the model sticker on the bottom of my Dell Inspiron has been lost to time, it peeled off and was thrown away some time ago before I knew better to save it.

I plan on taking it to Best Buy to try to find a compatible charger and battery as per it's specs (I'll have someone open it up), as the friend took the charger back and its battery is dead so it's not going to boot up now as it is. The charger for the 15-3000 series in the iFixit store might be compatible as well, but since it doesn't list this model it seems to be a gamble and I'd rather be sure before buying.

The status of the WLAN network adaptor was working correctly, but my father brought up a valuable point: my wifi is likely too modern for the Dell Inspiron 15-3531 at this point, so I'm probably going to have to rely on ethernet?

To find out the laptop's model number in Win10 , type Control Panel in the Windows Search box (left side of taskbar) and then click on the Control panel app that appears.

When in Control Panel click on Administrative Tools, then System Information, then System Summary and the model number should be listed under System Model

The battery model number or Dell part number will be printed on the original battery in the laptop.

As for the charger, if your friend's charger worked OK as long as it had the same DC output voltage/current (printed on charger itself) as shown for the power adapter in the specifications (I assume it is a Dell 3531?) get one the same as your friend, as it should work OK.

Regarding WiFi, if your home WiFi is working on 2.4GHz then it should work. If on 5GHz it won't.

You didn't specify what troubleshooting steps you did, but did you try a network reset?

Does it detect your network and just not connect to it or doesn't it detect any networks at all?

If no networks at all try downloading , installing and running this WiFi program and check if it shows any WiFi networks at all. If none it may be an antenna problem. Try using the laptop as close as possible to your WiFi router i.e. <25cm and see if it picks up the WiFi. If so it most likely is an antenna problem. Have you checked the antennae cable connections on the WLAN card are OK and not disconnected?
