Why is my new battery not calibrating?

I recently installed a new battery (from iFixit) in my early 2011 MacBook Pro. 3 to 4 years ago I installed another iFixit battery in this computer with no issues. This around, my computer does not seem to be able to calibrate with the new battery. I’ve followed the calibration instructions from iFixit, and tried a few initial troubleshooting procedures, but with no luck.

When my computer is not plugged into a power source, my battery icon shows 100% for a short while before continuing to show 100%, but turning red and indicating that I am low on battery. The battery percentage will rapidly drop from 100% to 5-7% and shut down shortly after that.

Please let me know if there are any other calibration or troubleshooting techniques that I should try in order to get my computer to allow the battery to truly receive a full charge.

OK, it does look like you’ve done at least one cycle calibration already. So maybe we need to not be so focused on that and look at what you are encountering. At present your battery is fully charged so if you where to unplug it how long would it take for the system to shut down (not sleep) Lets use a web site which doesn’t have any gif’s or video elements iFixit’s home page will do.

I’ll update this post once my computer shuts down. About 1 minute after I unplugged my computer the battery indicator went down to 7%, but it’s slowly increasing and is up to 12% after 20 minutes.

Jumped back down to 7% after about 30 minutes, and stayed there until it completed turned off after 35 minutes.

@bsubeck - Sorry I didn't catch you before my Zzzz's. If you haven't charged your system yet lets get a fresh snapshot of CoconutBattery (discharged) and then with the system on charge after about 4 mins take one more. Making sure to note when each was taken.

@danj I've added 3 screenshots to the original post. One taken immediately after plugging back in and starting up, one about 1 minute later after the computer turned off and on again, and the last after about 4 minutes of charge.

@bsubeck - Well you've got me scratching my head on this one!

This is looking like a microcontroller issue within the battery as the temp & battery data is getting though into SMC, but clearly the cycle value and the low and high water levels aren't getting set. But why??

Let's give this a try shut down your system and follow the guide to disconnect the battery, now sit the system on its side open with the MagSafe connection up. With nothing connected press and hold the power button for a good 15 sec to full discharge your systems logic. Now plug in your MagSafe, your system should spontaneously start up. Now, shut the system down and reconnect the battery now let it charge up if needed and let it run down again any better? Did the cycle count increment up?
