graphical glitches when lightly bending

i recently noticed that when i lightly apply pressure to the middle of the keyboard, the screen goes all wonky, colorful boxes appear and then i get a BSOD. the weird thing is, the BSOD doesn’t have those graphical glitches.

if i boot into my ubuntu installation, i don’t get the colorful boxes, but the screen kinda “shifts” something that those CRT TVs had, like this:

i have a pretty big suspicion that the motherboard or the gpu itself is damaged, but i want to get a second opinion on this matter, as im not an expert. thanks! :)

edit: weirdly enough, i noticed that there are no graphical glitches in the GRUB bootloader

Hi @richiie,

Try connecting an external monitor to the laptop and check what happens to its display when applying pressure to the keyboard.

Can you isolate it to exactly where you're applying pressure? This may be good to know if you open the laptop and check what is on the motherboard directly below where you're pressing.

What is the model number of the laptop?

@jayeff hi, it's a HP 15-cs3900na laptop. i don't have an external monitor to connect to yet, but i'm gonna try to find one. :)

edit: i'd say the graphics glitch whenever i lightly bend the keyboard part of the laptop slightly upwards.

Maybe check the LVDS cable connection to the motherboard is secure. Also check that it doesn't happen when moving the screen back and forth (without flexing the keyboard) as this could mean a faulty cable or loose connection in the panel. Flexing the keyboard may just be coincidental

If you have the appropriate HDMI cable, a TV can be used as an external monitor. Just connect the laptop to the TV's HDMI port.

This will help you to correctly open the laptop so that you can check etc. what's on the motherboard, underneath that point on the keyboard and the cable connection etc

@jayeff i just tried bending the laptop again, and i got a stop error code like this: DRIVER OVERRAN STACK BUFFER. while it was on the bsod, i tried lightly bending it again, and graphical glitches appeared again.

keep in mind that i'm bending it very lightly, you can't even see the bottom case bend. i'm pretty sure it's not the fault of the display because of the error.

Connecting to a TV or monitor will verify whether the problem is with the laptop display or the motherboard i.e. if it happens on both it's the motherboard, if only on the laptop display it's the cable or the LCD panel.

Might be better to prove this first before opening it up and trying to find things that may not be there e.g. looking for a motherboard problem when it is actually a display problem
