Hi,
The check engine lights tells you that something has gone wrong with the engine and to protect it from further damage it has been placed in limp mode.
This is so that you can get home or to a mechanic.
You need to get the car's OBDII port scanned for any error codes. The error code will tell you what's wrong. In the USA most major auto parts retail chains e.g. AutoZone, O'Reillys etc will do this for free.
