ok I have a Asus r554L flip laptop with windows 8.1. when its powered on and plugged in, it works fine, but when i unplug it and its still on the screen is black. I've checked other fixes like settings (don't have advance settings) and the brightness trick, they don't work, I've replaced the battery with a new one. I'm stumped and not sure what I'm missing.

Hi,
Are you sure that there's no advanced settings?
Check the battery or sleep settings(change to do nothing) and see what happens.
Also try connecting an external monitor to the laptop and check what happens to the display when the charger is disconnected to see if it may be a laptop display panel problem when on battery power only
