Asus Vivobook 15 X540UA Not Charging

I noticed that my laptop is no longer charging, I've tried plugging it in to different outlets but it doesn't look like it's the outlet. I've opened it up to attempt a static discharge but I'm having trouble removing the battery and I didn't want to potentially damage it so I stopped. Any other way to diagnose/fix the problem?

Hi @yaboihazel

Check that the charger's output is 19V DC at the cable plug of the charger to eliminate it as the problem

If it is OK then it might be a faulty DC-In jack - Asus part #12033-00030700 (supplier example only) The part number is applicable to your model. If the jack is faulty search for the part number only to find suppliers that suit you best.

Perhaps the jack has become loose from the board or more likely the +ve centre pin of the jack breaks internally opening the power path to the motherboard, preventing it from charging or starting once the battery has become depleted. If it is broken it cannot be repaired, it has to be replaced.

Use a voltmeter to measure the charger's voltage on the motherboard at the output of the jack or to be safe, disconnect the charger and the battery and use an Ohmmeter to check for continuity from the jack's input to output for both the centre pin +ve leg and the outer ring -ve leg

Hello @jayeff,

Thank you so much for your reply! I just have a couple follow up questions:

is there also a way to test if the charger is working? it's the original that came with the laptop and it is listed as 19V, and I've tried to google to see if I can also test it but the hole is too small for the multimeter probe to go into. Also, I can't seem to figure out where the output for the jack would be. I'm an absolute beginner when it comes to this stuff so I'm sorry if any of these questions seem stupid.

@yaboihazel

When you don't know, asking questions is never stupid. Not asking questions is stupid ;-)

I usually use a dressmaker's pin or a small brad nail and insert that into the plug for the +ve connection and touch it with the meter probe or better still my meter test leads have an alligator clip attachment so you can clip onto the metal part of the pin and the other probe onto the outer barrel connector of the plug.

Unfortunately without a schematic (I can't find a free one) you may have to remove the motherboard to test the jack as it's output is on the underside of the board. Here's a link to the schematic if you wish to purchase it. It should detail where the nearest topside connection point to the jack is so that you can test at that point.

You will have to remove the motherboard anyway to replace the jack if faulty
