Why doesn't my power button work?

Basically the power button doesn't work but the console still does. I can turn it on with a controller or the eject button but to turn the console off completely I have to unplug it which I wager is not good for it. I have looked for a tutorial on how to fix this but haven't come across anything for replacing the power button specifically. I'm hoping someone can give me a guide.

Hi Dibs,

It appears the whole faceplate that the power button is on only comes as a complete assembly, buttons and all. So as far as I can tell, if a button isn't working, the fix is to replace the full faceplate. So I don't have any other advice for you; if you want to disassemble the faceplate and try to identify and locate a replacement power switch then cool, you'll be a trailblazer and perhaps consider creating your own guide so others can benefit from your work.

Anyway, if you want to just go ahead and do what seems to be the standard fix, you can buy the faceplate with buttons here.

And it's always nice to have step by step instructions for replacing it, so here you go.

EDIT: If the problem turns out to be the actual electrical switch mounted on the motherboard, then you're looking at an entirely different repair. Fortunately, a user over at instructables.com had the same problem and went to the trouble of locating a replacement part and writing a guide!

The switch itself looks like it works for all the switches the front panel and can be found at mouser.com. They're only $0.63 USD each; you'll probably spend a lot more than that just on shipping, so might as well get a couple while you're at it.

Thanks Jerry! I will admit I was hoping for a cheaper fix for just the button as I have seen them for the eject button but this will do nicely. Thanks for the timely reply at such an odd hour.

It occurs to me after looking a little closer that you can actually test whether this will fix the problem before you go buy the part. Just follow the guide and take the faceplate off, then manually reach in and press the power button with the tip of a pen or something.

If it works fine, then yeah, go ahead and replace the faceplate, but if it's the actual electrical part of the switch we'll have to go back to the beginning and see if there's some other way to replace that switch on the motherboard.
