Looking to upgrade internal hard drive 1TB (Fusion drive setup)

Can I just upgrade the 1TB SATA HDD to a SSD with SATA adapter and conversion kit without replacing the NVME SSD blade or do I need to change both? Another scenario would be if possible could I replace the current 32gb NVME SSD blade with a 1TB one and get rid off the main SATA hard drive?

Use this guide for both the Hard drive (through step 22) or all the way for the blade. As you can quickly see the blade is hard to get to:

You will need the OWC thermal sensor (to prevent runaway fan noise) and the adhesive strip plus the cutting tool:

@mayor - FYI the newer macOS’s need the blade SSD removed as it gets in the way trying to link up with the replacement drive.

@danj Can you give me a link so I can study up on this? Thanks

@mayer - We’ve seen three cases here. Only after the SSD was pulled did things work. I was surprised as well when I hit the issue. The newer firmware in the 2014 systems onward don’t need the OWC sensor as well. It’s tough when Apple alters the firmware and OS.

@danj What OS does this start with? I have a 2017 on my bench now with an SSD + thermal sensor with boot issues now.

@mayer - I found the issue with Fusion Drives starting with Catalina. Did you try booting up on an external drive and reformat the Blade SSD. That was my solution for Mojave and High Sierra. With Catalina I’ve had to pull the Blade Drive.

With Mojave and newer you don’t need the SATA OWC thermal sensor in 2014 onwards.
