Psp 1004 screen does not display

Hello everyone!

I recently acquired a psp 1004 which was advertised as powering on but not displaying anything.

After I tried my luck with a new screen it still did not show anything

In the image attached I managed to spot this corroded capacitor I think.(I am a beginner and looking to get into soldering this Christmas)

Could anyone help me ID it so I can replace it?

Thank you in advance!

AMA, What is the model number of your board? Should be written on the board somewhere. Having that would help in trying to find the correct schematic, but Sony products are notoriously hard to find schematics for!

Well what I am seeing here is this number:

TA-086

1-871-690-31

I have tried to search it online now that you mentioned and I am still kind of lost about it all😅

@AMA Yeah, did the same now and schematics and board views aren’t available :( Start by doing as @jayeff suggests, then clean off that corrosion using >99% isopropyl alcohol and a medium hard brush (like a toothbrush or something). Maybe you can get a reading with an LCR meter.

@AMA The corroded component is not a fuse, most likely a capacitor.

If you can see shapes/shadows when shining a light at an angle, you have a bad backlight. Could be the driver circuit, or it could be the backlight on the screen.

Thank you so much for the answers people!

I love this community and I will try all that was suggested in this thread.

As for now I have to wait until Christmas for a multimeter😅 so I can check everything properly

And once again thank you all so very much!!!

@AMA

First check that the problem isn't a backlight problem with the display.

Turn on the console and then try shining a torch at an angle close to the screen and check for any images on the screen.

They will be very faint if they are there, so trying this in a darkened room may help to see them.

If you can see images onthe screen then there's a backlight problem. Most likely a blown backlight power fuse.

Not sure with your model, but with other PSP models the fuse is located on the underside of the motherboard, so you may have to remove the board and check.

Hopefully the fuse will be marked with an "F" component id on the board next to it but sometimes not.

Here's a video that shows where it is located on a PSP E1004 but this doesn't mean that it is the same on your model.

@jayeff I have tried what you said and it worked. I can see the time set screen

And I think I was able to ID the fuse it has a F0 on it

So my question is:

Do I just do what @geirandersen said with the corroded fuse or do I just replace the f0 fuse or both?

@AMA

Did you measure the fuse with an Ohmmeter (disconnect the battery first) to see if it was OK or not? It should test 0.00 Ohms if OK i.e. short circuit and OL or infinite Ohms if blown i.e. open circuit

If the fuse is blown replace it and check if the screen now displays OK. If you can't find a suitable fuse temporarily short it out with a piece of wire soldered between the two end of the fuse and check if the display turns on. If it does then you know it works but leaving the fuse shorted out is not a good idea so it is better to try and locate a fuse for it as you don't want to damage the display or the board if there is a problem

Did you clean the other component as suggested by @geirandersen?

It may be that it is OK or that even if not it doesn't affect anything too badly.

I think the problem with replacing it is that you don't know what with e.g. capacitor, resistor etc as there are no schematics to tell you and most likely there's no ID information on the board e.g. C or R etc or the component to tell you what it is and what value it has.

Hopefully the F0 fuse has a voltage/current rating value marked on the board next to it.
