When I start up iMac ,A mini blinking Icon flashes.why?

Your machine cant find a valid operating system. Try booting from your system installation disk "C" key. Go to the second screen pull down menu to Utilities > Disk Utility. See if your hard drive shows up in the left hand column. If so select it and run repair on it till it runs clear. Then repair the permissions. If your hard drive fails to appear, replace it.
