Formatting Sierra on new SSD

I have been trying to update this Mac Desktop Tower with an SSD. Whats happening is the drive will only allow for short cut keys when the old drive is attached along with the new drive. The time machine backup failed and I am no longer able to access the desktop via the old mechanical drive. When I press any short key like recovery mode (command option + R) I erase the drive and format Mac Journal Extended > Reinstall Mac OS Sierra > it gets to where its going to finish and it gets stuck on negative seconds remaining. I am using a Accelsior S so the drive can reach its full potential in the older system. Ive also added some pictures to show the error I get in the logs Error 1080.

So here's my question. Why can't I access recovery tools when only the new SSD is connected?

Am I getting an error because its an external drive with both drives connected?

Is there a fix for this that someone is aware of?

Update (03/06/2023)

Here is a picture of the log when installing High Sierra. I believe the system came with High Sierra or Sierra. El Capitan fails after copying user files. It’s not letting me create a Sierra bootable drive for some reason.

Yes it’s plugged into the adapter. I’ll have to see about saving to pdf.

Which SATA port is the drive connected to? Is the drive mounted in the OWC Accelsior S board. I cant read the errors if you can save the log to a pdf and post it here that would be a great help.

Yes it’s mounted in the Accelsior S. The old drive is mounted in the first SATA port. I’ll have to explore repeating the failed format and saving it somehow. If you zoom in on the image it’s somewhat legible.

I updated the original post with a new update. It wont let me save the documents either.

@dshort1988 - OK, I think I see the issue, the installer is unable to find the Ma Pro data files. So the installer drive is missing them for some reason.

Let’s do this grab El Capitan from here set up a fresh drive with it as a USB thumb drive bootable installer drive and get it running first. Then upgrade it to Sierra.

First format the USB drive to GUID with a Journal F/S. Get the OS from here How to download macOS and follow this to convert it to a bootable drive Create a bootable installer for macOS

Let’s know how it goes!

It worked! Would you say it’s safe to install high Sierra from desktop?

I did the update it requested on ex El Capitan and now it’s super buggy and most things crash when I click on them.
