Television graphical glitch, power cycles, ultra-slowness

Bought this TV used. Big mistake; it was misrepresented. Model UN55MU6300FXCZ television

Anyway, the thing has EXTREME slowness (as in, 5-25 seconds to register a single menu command), and that is only when it turns on properly. Has problems with graphical glitches (Colours/lines/squares that in a PC would be associated with GPU failure), often power cycles/completely crashes.

Complete factory reset of system had mixed results. First one resulted in the same situation. Second reset made the thing almost usable. Third one, only boots to graphical glitches; cannot access menu.

My knowledge of TVs is limited (have extensive computer knowledge though). To me, this sounds like a mainboard problem.

Is this a mainboard problem? Is it reasonable to attempt a repair on this TV? Are there guides/tips/things I ought to know?

@duckmcquack verify your TV model for us. Yes, most likely it will be the main board but it can also be the panel. Clarify this "only when it turns on properly. " a bit better.

@oldturkey03 Thanks for the detailed response. I haven't done TV repair before, so if I may ask, are there any particular resources/things I should know? And where I might find schematics or breakdowns?

And, how can I diagnose a TCON board vs a main board?

@oldturkey03 Yeesh, talk about my bad luck. Oh well. Maybe I should just say goodbye to that $160 I spent and stop throwing good money after bad.

@duckmcquack looks like your TV has only the power and main board (That means T-con is on the main board. Without proper schematic it's all a guess. The integrated boards are harder to diagnose since they packed so many components on it and are starting to non longer use reference designators for test points or components. IF you would have a separate T-con board, you would measure the different voltage that the T-con board produces to supply to the LCD driver boards and ultimately the panel.

@oldturkey03 Good to know. Thanks for the time and detailed information.

Do you have a model number on that main board? I live in a different country than the USA (Canada), so it is possible I could still check the price elsewhere.

Still, losing $160USD (200CAD) as a fresh college graduate sucks. Oh well

@duckmcquack I just checked and I do not have a schematic for your TV. Seems like they are not available at my regular places. Anyhow, I also checked on common issues for your main board. Amazingly it is NOT readily available. If you do find it, it is very expensive even the used ones. That is usually a pretty good indicator that there are issues with it. People buy up the "good" ones for repair purposes.

@oldturkey03 My apologies; cant believe I forgot to copy/paste model number. It is an UN55MU6300FXCZ television.

Regarding 'turning on properly', that means when it actually boots to the main home menu. Often it power cycles before that point, or results in pretty graphical glitches that prevent the main home/menu area from ever showing up.

How would it be the panel exactly? The extreme lagginess/power-cycling/graphical glitches sound more like bad ram/gpu/cpu instead of a display to me, but hey I am a rookie so I would appreciate an explanation

@duckmcquack not as much the panel but the LCD driver boards that are connected to the panel. Some of those have T-con chips on it that can cause symptoms similar to what you are describing. Bad voltage regulators and buck converters in the VON circuitry can cause issues like slow motion graphics etc. SInce your TV seems to do weird things right on startup it is most likely the main board (you may have the T-con board integrated on that. I have not checked the schematics yet :-) Make sure that you do check the power board as well. Check the voltages on the power board where the main board connects to. Just to rule out issues with those. It'll help to isolate the main board as the issue.

The only repair for a GPU issue would be a reball, but sometimes ;-) you get away with a reflow. REmember the old "in the oven to bake a board" that became popular with the PS3 and Xbox? That "can" work for a bad main board as well.
