Why does my screen display only white noise?

I opened my Asus Zenbook laptop the other morning, and the display only shows white noise. I tried all kinds of different keyboard startup combinations, removing the battery etc, but nothing seems to work. The computer only starts up and diplays white noise. When I long press the power button, the fan starts making a loud sound. What could be the problem? Thanks for all the help.

Hi @jalle656,

Connect an external monitor (TV?) to the laptop's HDMI port and check if there is a display OK on the monitor when you turn on the laptop and it has booted into Windows.

Press the F8 key a few times to toggle between showing the laptop screen only, the external display only or both on together.

If there is no display at all on the external monitor , the laptop may not even be passing POST (Power On Self Test). Are any of the lights on the laptop e.g. Caps light or Power light blinking at all?

I added a second display, and the display recognizes that a device has been added - the external display just is black, nothing is shown on it even though I toggle the F8-key. The Caps light and power light work normally. Thanks for your answer!

Hi @jalle656

Try getting into BIOS on startup by pressing the F2 key shortly after turning the laptop on and check if the laptop display is working OK.

There won't be a display on an external monitor when in BIOS because you need Windows to be loaded for the external monitor to work (with either GPU)

You only have a short period of time between starting the laptop and it boots into Windows to press the key. If you miss, it will boot and you will have to shutdown and start again.

I'm wondering if there's a problem with the Nvidia GPU .

The laptop has two GPUs, the integrated Intel GPU and the discrete Nvidia GPU.

The Nvidia is not used until Windows boots and loads the drivers whereas the BIOS always uses the Intel GPU.

If you can't get into BIOS with a display then there's a motherboard problem

Thanks for a thorough answer. The laptop does not respond to any commands, after booting it's black for 3 seconds, then the white noise starts. Pressing f2 at any interval after booting does not help... so I can't get into BIOS! A shame, it seems that its a motherboard problem then... right?

@jalle656

You have to press F2 before it starts "booting".

Startup and booting are two different things

On startup i.e. pressing the Power button, the laptop enters POST i.e. Power On Self Test.

This is where the BIOS checks the hardware and if all is OK only then will it start "booting" into the OS.

POST is when the makers logo is on the screen before the Windows screen appears, although "faststart" in Windows has cut down the time frame between the two.

Basically immediately after you press the Power button start mashing the F2 button repeatedly just to see if you can get into BIOS.

If still no good then yes it's a motherboard problem.

Ok thanks! Tried everything, doesn't work... does a motherboard problem mean that the laptop is unfixable? Or at least very hard to fix? The laptop is quite old, so if it's too hard to fix, I'll figure out something else.

@jalle656

You could try a power refresh and check if that does anything.

Open the laptop and disconnect the battery from the motherboard. The are YouTube videos for your model that show how to do battery replacements

You don't have to remove it, simply disconnect the battery cable.

Then press and hold the power button for a full 30 seconds and release it.

Reconnect the battery, reassemble the laptop and try turning it on and check what happens.

If no good, you would need to source the schematics for the laptop, which with Asus is not easy as there aren't many out there, and then go on from there.
