GE Fridge intermittently not freezing

I have a GE refrigerator model number GSH25JSXN SS that has intermittent issues with cooling, especially the freezer section.

The fridge/freezer will work fine for 3-6 months then suddenly stop freezing. I’ve had several repairmen come out and give a bunch of bad diagnosis over the last couple years, but the issue just seems to resolve itself spontaneously after being plugged and unplugged for a while.

I want to resolve this issue, but so far the professionals in my area haven’t been very helpful.

Things that I know are working:

  • compressor runs
  • Condenser coils are clean
  • Condenser coil fan works
  • Evaporator coils cool
  • Defrost cycle turns on and off (element is heating up, and turning on and off by itself)
  • Defrost cycle seems to work (not all frosted up)
  • Fan in freezer is running and circulating the air (can feel air moving, so not being blocked)
  • Seals on the refrigerator doors are good (I’ve done the dollar test)

One thing I did notice is last time only the bottom part of the evaporator coil in the freezer had ice on it. I’ve read that could be related to low refrigerant (though every time it was serviced the techs said there was not a leak and nothing needed topping up).

Any ideas what could be going on?

Hi @nicholaspi14247

When the freezer stops freezing (what is the actual temp in the freezer?) is the temperature in the refrigerator compartment still around about the correct temperature?

Is the compressor running when the freezer is not freezing or is it stopped?

If running, then perhaps the ice dispenser door assembly may be intermittently not closing correctly allowing warm air to enter the freezer (or cold air to escape if you like). Perhaps check when the problem occurs if there's an ice build up around the dispenser door

If there is a problem with the ice door assembly, here's a video that shows how to replace it, if it is faulty.

The part number for the dispenser door assembly for your model is WR17X11653 Search online using the part number only to find suppliers that suit you best.

Hi @jayeff,

Thanks for the reply! I checked the ice dispensing door and it is closed and there doesn’t seem to be any air leak.

I don’t get get any ice build up on the surfaces in the freezer even when it is working properly. Only build up I’ve ever seen was on the evaporator coil behind the rear wall panel.

Thanks!

I meant that maybe check if it was closed when the problem occurred as it may be only intermittently not closing properly.

Intermittent problems can be hard to find. It would be easier if it failed entirely and didn't work rather than only showing up occasionally.

What is the actual temp in the freezer and the refrigerator when the problem occurs, you never said? Knowing this may also give a clue as to what's happening.

use a thermometer and don't rely on the refrigerator's temp display (if it has one) just to be sure that it is not misleading
