Kenmore Dryer POWERS OFF mid-cycle on timer and moisture settings

I have a kenmore dryer model 592-89032 serial number JK445BBC200121M. It's approximately 10 years old. It has started shutting down/powering off mid-cycle. By power off I mean it's as if someone unplugged it— no lights, chimes, or 'END' notification. The amount of time the cycle runs for varies (between 10 seconds and ~10 minutes). The timer and/or moisture countdown, according to the LED screen, progresses normally up until the machine powers off (i.e., the timer doesn't appear to be jumping from 45 mins to 1 min in an unusually short period of time). It's NOT as if the cycle was paused. I can power the machine back on pretty much immediately (sometimes it takes 2 seconds) and start another cycle, but it has no memory of where it left off. It does not have an issue heating up. This occurs when exclusively using the timer AND when exclusively using the moisture sensor, which leads me to think neither of those is the cause of the problem. It occurs when using high heat and when using extra low heat (I have not yet done enough tests to determine whether the heat setting is correlated with the time to failure, but if it is it isn't obvious). The door switch feels normal to me, but intentionally opening the door mid-cycle causes the cycle to 'pause' which is not the symptom I am experiencing. I do not hear any buzzing or humming noises. I have unplugged the unit and plugged it back in after several minutes. The lint trap is empty but I have not yet taken apart the machine or vent to the outside. On the topic of whether it could be overheating: Many years ago, I replaced a thermal limit switch (a pipe connection was loose inside the dryer enabling lint to blow onto the heater) because the switch did not automatically reset itself; when that happened the dryer could run but not heat. Perhaps this dryer ALSO has thermal limit switches that reset themselves automatically when the parts cool (?), but I'm not convinced the dryer is overheating because 1) I'm able to restart it right away, 2) there are no errors codes, 3) the dryer has no issue heating up when I restart it, and 4) in the past, tripping the thermal limit switch did not cause the dryer to 'power off'— is that a valid line of reasoning? When I look up 'dryer shutting off mid-cycle' it appears that most people are discussing the dryer 'pausing' or 'ending' the cycle (rather than powering off entirely). Aside from a faulty on/off switch or control board, are there any other parts that could cause this set of symptoms? Is there a switch that causes the machine to power off if airflow is obstructed but the machine is NOT overheating? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi @spiniker69990,

Please confirm the full model number of the dryer, as searching for the model number you posted gives no results?

Hi Jayeff, Confirmed. It says "MOD: 592-89032" on the sticker. It was purchased in Sears in Canada about a decade ago. I believe this is the user manual: https://www.manualslib.com/products/kenm..., and appearance wise it matches this used dryer posted under the same model number: https://maxappliances.ca/product/electri...

Hi @spiniker69990

Sorry I can't help you.

I was hoping to find the service manual or the tech sheet with a wiring diagram but both these suppliers supplier 1 supplier 2 don't list it at all for spare parts

If the user manual you linked is applicable then the best that I could find out is that it is a Samsung dryer, rebadged as a Kenmore or at least the dryer comprises Samsung parts. This is based on the part number for the user manual shown on the 1st page of the manual you linked i.e. DC68-02867A-01.

This numbering scheme is common to LG products.

It is not unusual that Kenmore does this. It uses a lot of different other brands as well e.g. LG, Whirlpool, Frigidaire etc

I suppose that you could try contacting the parts suppliers listed and ask if they have any info on it.

On the upper right corner of the sticker with the model number, mine lists 'DC68-02863D'. Perhaps that's related to its original manufacturer?

I actually have the service manual so I can upload a copy of the wiring diagram (to the original question). Btw the front of the service manual says "models: 592.8903*"

@spiniker69990

Thanks for the wiring diagram.

I can't be sure but I suspect that the problem may be with the thermal cut off switch (TH3 actually circled on the diagram).

With some dryers it just disconnects the heater element from the power so as to prevent a fire, but with others it disconnects the power entirely from the machine. i.e. no obvious display etc.

Does the service manual give a description of what it does?

Unfortunately regarding finding a replacement part if it is faulty may prove difficult as both the suppliers linked above still don't recognize the model number you updated. Hopefully there may be some information stamped on it that may help to find one if necessary

One supplier did recognize the DC68-02863D number however but states it is a user manual, but I couldn't find anything else anywhere when using it.

FYI I was wrong it isn't an LG machine, it's a Samsung.

My dryer was not drying loads completely, either on timer or moisture indicator. The ducts below the lint screen tray were clogged with lint. Next time you are in the guts, you might check for buildup. Also, I understand that use of dryer sheets can cause the lint screen tray to look fine but actually be clogged, preventing good air circulation. Run some water into the tray - if it doesn't drain through, scrub it with sudsy water. I have heard that this issue can cause fires. And good luck with your repair!

Thanks for you reply. I have cleaned out the lint (vacuumed the ducts and tray, brushed the blower motor, etc). I have attempted loads with the lint screen removed and the duct detached but unfortunately the symptoms were the same.
