After flexgate fix and battery replacement, keyboard does not work

My Macbook Pro had a high battery cycle count and the flexgate issue where the display went blank when it was opened more than approximately 60°.

I replaced the battery and, at the same time, spliced in a new cable to fix the display. The machine now boots up and the display can be opened normally; however, there is no longer any response from the keyboard which had no issues prior to the fix.

The trackpad still works fine as does the touchbar. There was never anything spilled on the machine and no physical damage.

I reopened the machine, reseated the trackpad cable, and cannot see anything else out of place. I'm hoping this is a simple fix and I just missed something small, but I'm not sure what to look for or to test.

I have a "magic" keyboard for an iMac as well as another generic BlueTooth keyboard, but no way to connect to the USB C port on the Macbook, nor to connect via BT since I cannot log in. My next step is to get a USB A to C adapter so I can connect an external keyboard and try to at least reset the SMC.

What else do I need to consider?

I should also mention that I did not remove the logic board for the battery replacement. I removed the screws and lifted up the logic board just enough to slide the battery cables underneath as shown in an online video. So I also did not remove the logic board when I inspected it after the keyboard failure.

Good evening,

Big ouch. Considering the way these macbooks are, i wouldn't be surpised if just moving the logic board slightly with the keyboard cable in can break something.

If u removed the cable during the process: Try reseating it a few times to see if that will remove whatever is caught

if u didn't remove the cabled during process: You've likely broken some kind of connection down the chain by moving the board thanks to apple and it's stupid tolerances (or rather, lack thereof). Pull the entire board out and check the cable connection on every single pin to ensure there is continuity between the butterfly keyboard assembly and the board's connector.

@np_f1_2021 - One typically doesn’t need to remove the logic board to replace the battery, for a first timer I would recommend it as between the tightness of the battery board and the logic board it does take a bit of finesse to ease the battery out. But if you follow the iFixit guide as I’ve linked it’s not an issue. Managing the solvent would be the only risk.

@np_f1_2021 Thanks, I took my time and am confident I didn't move the logic board any more than necessary. Though, compared to fixing the display cable, everything seemed relatively simple so I may have overlooked something.

@danj I made my own plastic pry tools and took my time with the battery since I didn't want solvent anywhere near my laptop so no risk there.

I'll check that cable connector and if nothing, I'll remove the logic board and inspect again. Given the small size of the pins on the connectors, are there tools to check continuity or is a microscope the best option?

@z4am - I use home made micro-probes taking glass capped sewing pins soldering a wire to them and use heat shrink tubing to insulate the pins shaft and hold the wire. But I don’t think you need to go that far.

All I would do here is use a simple magnifier to spy on the little pins.

The 15” models have a dedicated keyboard cable which you can see in Steps 22 & 23 in this guide MacBook Pro 15" Touch Bar 2017 Battery Replacement

Inspect the cable and the logic board connector for possible contact pin damage.

First I'll take back my note that there was never anything spilled on the machine since this was originally my wife's laptop and she admits there "may" have been something spilled on it in the past.

To add to my comments on the question, the excessive fan noise in addition to the keyboard failure prompted me to install a few diagnostic tools, but what was most valuable is the Apple Diagnostics test result which showed PFM006 & PPN001 error codes. That combination of codes resulted in additional search results and it turns out many people see fan and keyboard issues after battery replacement. The fixes range from re-seating, cleaning, or replacement of keyboard, trackpad, and battery cables as well as replacement of the trackpad.

The Keyboard Not Working guide says that "nearly all MacBooks relay keyboard information via the trackpad cable" so I also ordered a new trackpad cable. However, in my case, removing the trackpad and cleaning that and the cable resolved the problem.

And I did find evidence that my wife had spilled something on the trackpad in the past. :)
