Frigidaire upright freezer stops maintaining temp after ~6 month

FFFU20F2VW upright freezer works well for about 6m then won’t maintain temp. Not overly iced up and fan still spins freely. Replaced heating element. Ran diagnostic test and everything seems to be working correctly. After unplugging and defrosting the unit it will run fine for about 6 months before the internal temp again begins to rise.

Hi @jackd90504,

You said after unplugging and defrosting that it works again, how much ice was on the evap unit?

Did you have to defrost it to make it work correctly again?

How high does the temp get to when it stops maintaining the temp?

Is the compressor still running when the temp goes up or has it stopped and will it only restart if you reset the refrigerator by disconnecting/reconnecting the power?

There was some ice build up but nothing excessive and the fan was still able to spin freely.

The temp continued to rise and it was no longer cooling. The compressor would try to kick on but wouldn’t fully turn over.

Honestly, I never tried disconnecting then reconnecting the power instead, I always unplugged it and allowed it to defrost before trying to figure out the problem.

Hi @jackd90504

Perhaps when it fails, check the DC voltage values on the main control board to see if they're all within specs.

The compressor is a variable speed inverter type controlled by a 12V DC signal from the control board so if it is not starting when it should it may be getting an incorrect signal.

Also the 5V DC voltage supplied to the temp sensors, if incorrect, may cause them to indicate the incorrect temp so the control board doesn't know if it should be cooling i.e. turn on compressor, or not.

Really scratching here for a reason due to the long intervals between the problem happening. Intermittent problems are hard. You have to try and narrow it down to what is happening (or not happening) when it should be and then try to simulate it to hopefully find out why. Not the easiest I know.

Hopefully it is not the compressor.

Here's the wiring diagram that may help.
