Can I replace or reseat the RAM?

Hi,

My Dell XPS 9700 has been persistently buggy for a long time. Fan runs constantly, occasional unexplained freeze-ups. I was doing something unrelated to the problems when I discovered that Windows believes I only have 8 gigs of RAM on this thing. I checked software & boot issues and nothing turned up. Seems like the remaining option is to replace/reseat the RAM. How difficult would it be to crack this thing open and do that myself. I've replaced batteries in phones, but that's about all the iFixit I have ever done.

@doughoff how much memory do you KNOW your computers has and what exact version Windows are you using?

@doughoff actually it's not as bad as you might think. Download the service manual for your computer from here Page 19 shows you what to do to work on those. If you do want to clean the Ram modules, I use a pencil eraser to clean the contacts.

Since iFixit does not yet have a guide for this, it would be great if you could do this. While you work on your computer, take lots of pictures. Once you are done with it, take those pictures and create a guide for iFixit. That will help the next person that has the same problem as you do. It's easy and fun to create these guides. https://ifixit.com/Guide/new The iFixit community will appreciate this.

Well, now I feel kind of doubly foolish. I went to the Dell site and looked up the specs on my XPS 17 order from way back in 2020 and ... yep, two 4 gig sticks. I actually kitted this thing out pretty well - UHD HDR touchscreen, NVidia Geforce graphics, but WTAF was I thinking in getting only 8 gigs of RAM? So not only was I foolish for forgetting how much RAM this machine had, I was foolish for getting that little!

Anyway, thanks for the help. I have 64 gigs on order and will be able to swap them out. I am hoping this may fix some of the performance problems
