Want to swap out fusion drive for SSD but have someone help me

Is there still a local repair event at iFixit's SLO headquarters? I have a 5k retina imac 2019 that I want to swap out the fusion drive for an SSD https://www.ifixit.com/products/imac-intel-27-late-2012-late-2019-ssd-upgrade-kit but I'm hesitant to do it on my own and would love to bring my son and let him experience tearing apart the computer. Alternatively, does ifixit have any local people in San Luis Obispo that take on small projects like this?

Hi @charlie29576,

We don't have any iFixit specific repair cafes on the docket right now, but we are working closely with the 5 Cities Repair Café. The next one will be early February. You can keep tabs on the dates on this website, or their Instagram page. (Both haven't been updated as of today, but when they're scheduled, they'll be updated.)

Thanks Dan. Any suggestions on my options to upgrade it would be appreciated

@charlie29576 - What is your use case? While I can understand the desire to do away with the Fusion Drive which is a SATA HD with a PCIe blade SSD which is used as a cache drive (not accessible via Disk Utility’s). You do need to remove it as well.

Your direction with a SATA SSD is a good one for a general use system. If you are looking for more performance then you do want to get to 16GB of RAM at least and think about a dual drive setup here we Worcestershire the anemic blade SSD with a much larger blade SSD like the 1TB OWC drive making it the boot drive, apps and OS virtual RAM and cache. Then the SATA drive is th data drive which holds your media and work files.

Use case is the thing run's sooo loud and slow. Its practically unusable. The screen is still great and I want to utilize it and make it faster so it can run the latest Operating systems. Obviously the fusion drive was a terrible decision on apple's part and I want the fix it to have it run off an SSD in the cheapest way possible. General use for kids is what I'm after and not breaking the computer if I decide to do the repair myself

@charlie29576 - Use Case or some call it Work Flow is not the condition but what you are doing with the system, ie. web & email, gaming, music or video production and lastly coding or image/photo work.

Ah. Yes. Sorry. The kids will primarily be using (school, learning apps for kids, and possibly graphical work or editing. I don't want to limit what they can do on it. If I have the computer open and can beef it up more by doing what you suggested above I'm happy to unless it starts getting to the point where I should buy a new one. Are you saying I should put two SSD's in it? Are there instructions on ifixit for what you are suggesting?
