Camera working for pictures but not for videos

Hello!

I have an Asus ZenFone 6 (ZS630KL) which had some water damage, and the camera was not detected at all by the phone.

Now I cleaned a bit all the connectors, and the camera works again! (the main one works at least).

The problem is that, even if the camera is working when taking pictures, when recording videos the quality is horrible and it is sometime not even detected (for instance, I am not able to make a videocall via whatsapp).

What can be the issue? Has anyone some ideas about how can the same sensor work for a picture but not for a video?

@piripuz could be a camera issue but could also be a motherboard issue. "I cleaned a bit" let us know how and what you cleaned and what you consider a bit. It would also be good to know how old the water damage is/was before you cleaned it.

The way I would proceed is:

Clean the motherboard properly

Re-evaluate

Repalce the camera

Re-evaluate

@oldturkey03 Yes, sorry for the lacking question.

Sadly, replacing the camera is totally out of budget. What I wanted to ask is mainly if someone knows the difference between how videos are taken and how pictures are.

Anyway, what I did was opening up the cellphone (please note that my zenfone 6 is not the one that's in the object, but rather a more modern one with the same name). The motherboard looked perfect so I opened the camera module that seemed a bit damaged. I simply unplugged the connectors, blew on them and plugged them back.

What do you mean by properly? (I guess it doesn't involve blowing)

@piripuz now that makes sense. I figured it would be a newer model ;-)

Tell us more about the water damage and the damaged camera module. If you noticed any damage on that, it would be the first suspect. After that its back to the video IC’s on your motherboard. Water damage is a pain since any part can get damaged. To fix it, we would need to find a schematic etc. for your phone
