Touched my mobo with a screwdriver it gave a spark

Hello,

I accidentally touched mobo with a screwdriver. It sparked and after the battery did not work. It works on the cable, but simply not on the battery. I unscrewed my battery and have my laptop completely off. Is there a chance it will be just a minor thing or pernament damage?

Do you know exactly where you touched the motherboard with the screw driver? Why had you not disconnected the battery first before touching anything?

@aactech I touched the battery connector on the MOBO. I can find an image link.

The thing is I was removing the battery at this very moment, but I tried to get the tape off with a screwdriver, which made me accidentally touch it just on the side

@rudypolak Yes it happens to us all from time to time. It is good that at least the computer works on the charger. Does it work with the charger and the battery connected? Yes? No? Does the charging light come on? What we want to determine is if the charging circuit has been damaged. Hopefully only the battery was damaged and all you need to do is replace the battery.

At this point I have to leave you to my colleagues who have more experience testing charging circuits laptop circuits.

What is that connector in the photo for?

Hi @rudypolak

Looking at the image you posted it seems that you may have damaged component PL4 (an emi power inductor type # 5A Z150 20M 1210_2P) and according to the schematic for the motherboard, (see image below) possibly component PRB01 as well. (a resistor type # 0.01_1206_1% i.e 0.01 OHM 1% tolerance resistor in a 1206 smd package)

To test if the inductor is OK, if the battery is still connected, but not the charger, check if there is battery voltage (12.0V+?) on both sides of PL4. If not it is open circuit and needs to be replaced.

Alternatively, if the battery is not connected (or the charger) use an Ohmmeter to check if there's continuity through the inductor i.e. 0.00 Ohms - short circuit. I can't find out the value of the inductor beyond the fact that it has a 5A (amps) current rating and comes in a 1210 2 pin smd package. You may have better luck than I did searching for the type number. Maybe @aactech knows ;-)

Many thanks, but I will visit a repair shop that does Board Level working as soon as they reply.

hiya,

So I was looking into the Motherboard again and the PLB01 component seems just fine but I am officially taking it today to an engineer.

@rudypolak

Bit confused by your comment as I said I thought it was PL4 component and not PLB01 that you just said?

Sorry I meant the component PRB01. I wanted to check it since you've said it might need a replacement, but to me it seems like the Motherboard does not have any more visual damage. Is it safe to assume its just the PL4 component?

I've made an image and I uploaded the picture online. Here's the link: https://ibb.co/8jr1PZQ

Try to replace the battery and see if it fixes it if it don’t then it’s probably a bad capacitor or fuse or a chip

I will go to one of the nearby engineers as soon as possible. They said that the repair might vary from £65 up to a 100 so I think I can manage
