How can I upgrade my 17" A1297 2.5 to Catalina?
I have another laptop that is running Catalina that works well enough for me.

Sadly it’s just not possible. This series of Mac’s used a 16bit CPU (CoreDuo) Catalina requires a true 32bit CPU (i5, i7 or i9)

@xmaslovechild - Which model? The root issue is how the shim service integrates with you given systems firmware calls. This is we’re we often talk about a 32Bit clean EFI, this system is strictly 16Bit.
