the macbook will light up and will display on a external but not the screen it stays lit up and not display on the internal lcd

Sounds like you have possible damage to the data display cable, cabling, or LCD . Start by opening the laptop following one of the guides to check the connections and wires if all looks good leading into the display then the display is suspect.
