Battery replaced and I’m scared of the old one

Old battery scares me more than being in Iraq. There’s a sickly sweet smell coming from it. Tried to seal it away in the replacement box and a bag. I really want to call the fire department for real.

What else can I do? How long do these things de-gas for? I’ve never seen a battery do this with out igniting.

Yes I tried the pull tabs they failed because of the battery damaging itself way before I opened the phone. (Apparently years ago.)

Yes I used 99% IPA to breakdown the glue strips.

No the battery is not becoming a spicy pillow.

No the battery is not warm to touch with or with out gloves.

I remember I accidently punctured a battery once.

What I did was to simply place the battery in a bowl of salty water and then leave it for a couple hours (or until the water stops bubbling). I would also recommend doing this outside as it does release hydrogen and chlorine which can prove to be a hazard if the area is not well ventilated. This should discharge the battery and make it safer to handle.

I didn’t have the chance to puncture it lol. I used the guitar pick to get it out.

This method should still work considering all it does is discharge the battery via electrolysis, which is some interesting chemistry stuff.

@mapleinit appreciate it 👍

@mapleinit Water? Lithium and water do not like each other at all. Might just create a bit of an explosive gas (Lithium Hydroxide and Hydrogen)

@youweesh if you are really concerned about it do what I do. Stick it in a metal can filled with sand. Let it de-gas for a day or two. After that dispose of it according to your local regulations.
