Stage-light effect occurs after a few minutes of running

I have a stage light issue with the 2018 MacBook Pro (A1989). It occurs after a few minutes of running (variable times) and whenever I adjust the screen to max brightness. I was mistaken in that it does occasionally appear at login. 'pmset displaysleepnow' fixes the issue only when the screen is not set to max brightness, yet it doesn't last very long (variable). It does seem dependent on how many tasks I am running. All display options are off. Have tried to reset vram but doesn't seem to have an effect. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Since this got moved to its own question I'll add that unlike the previous person with seemingly the same problem, whose Mac was in great condition, my Mac has taken a tumble a while ago, can't remember if the issues began then.

@jeremy99686 let us know what exact model MBP you have. This question got converted from a comment to its own question. Also, this "occurs after a few minutes of running (variable times) and whenever I adjust the screen to max brightness" sounds like a backlight issue. Most likely a bad LED strip (or controller) that shuts down once it gets hot from the max power. Post an image of what your display shows with your Question. That way we can see what you see.

@oldturkey03 Thank you for your response, the heating issue does make a lot of sense, the longer I run my computer the more quickly this issue appears. Thank you!

@jeremy99686 It could be the backlight inside your LCD (BAD) or the power to your backlight strips (BETTER) let me see if I can find more info on the display adapter. It is also possible that this a Flexgate issue (REALLY BAD). Again, let me see first if I can dig up more info on your computer.

@oldturkey03 Wow I really appreciate it, I do have a multimeter so I could attempt your method but can't confidently say I wouldn't do more harm than good. It does work well enough for my uses so I don't want to take up too much of your time. A I see what you mean by the power to the backlight strips, so that would not require a new display? Also don't think it's a Flexgate issue as the problem never appears as a result of tilting the screen. cheers

@jeremy99686 I also had this problem with a 2009 model:

Stage light effect, external works fine which has now died completely.... might be of a similar issue.....

@jeremy99686 it does not look good. This indeed seems to be an issue with the T-con board (flexgate ;-) Check the eDP connection. Pin number 16 is where your backlight brightness gets it power from etc. It leads right to the T-con board Pin 24 and 26 are your backlight data and clock lines. Looks like either a new display or you find a good microsolder expert that does that type of repair.

Thank you for looking into it, unfortunately I can't make much sense of the chart, perhaps ill try and figure it out eventually :) I appreciate the help and will perhaps try to replace the display if I find a good deal! Thank you for your time and have a good day!

@jeremy99686 & @livfe - As oldturkey03 had stated your issue could be either a logic board or display.

Lets dive a bit deeper on the display side of things. Unlike the 2009 system which has a lot of exposed areas for corrosion damage to effect one or two of the LED strands within the Backlight strip in the LCD (hence the reason you get the stage light effect).

This series also has another risk which is a damaged Chin plate which is a thin glass plate just under the display where the MacBook Pro logo is present. If this is damaged it can cut into the thin ribbon cables passing under it to the LCD. Here if some of the lines are damaged they can disconnect as the display is heated up from use. Similar to how a loose ceiling light bulb in a socket can wink on and off as you walk across the floor above.

Thank you, the damaged chin plate does make a lot of sense as there is some damage around there… I have a bad habit of learning the hard way when it comes to my electronics… When I eventually upgrade maybe ill try and replace the screen as it would be an interesting project, although I really do hate messing with ribbon cables. Thanks for your help and respect to the person still using the 2009 mac, if it still works for you why change it! Have a good one!
