Orange Light on, but it is not connected to laptop!

This is a weird one, The orange light is ON on the connector but it isn't connected to the laptop.... It still charges the battery and goes Green to Orange when connected, disconnect and it turns to Orange and the light stays on until I turn the power supply off..... and now it seems to functioning normally, switch off, turn on, Orange light yet it is not connected .......what has happened? (MagSafe II 85w) I was testing an old MB Air 11" with it (Yes I know I should really use the 45w charger for the Air).... and now back to normal..... randomly often happening.

Either the cord is damaged or the brick its self has a short internally. Likely a knock off.

Well, the cord is intact and it is an original apple brick ;)

Maybe better to ask this as a comment rather than an 'answer'.

It is actually working OK now.... strange

@livfe

With it powered on and without it being plugged into a laptop, try slowly flexing the cord at both ends, where it enters the plug and where it leaves the case and check if the problem occurs.

It's not unheard of for a power cord to go faulty and then come good again if the wiring has been damaged internally in the cord especially where it enters the plug and leaves the case, due to users over a period of time tightly winding the cord etc when storing

@jayeff Yes this can likely be what has happened, It was 100% normal before, I switched on the switch, all OK, no lights, connected to laptop, went to orange normal, then when I disconnected it from th laptop the orange light stayed on until I turn off the switch.... switch back on and it was sometimes going to orange and sometimes no light as normal.... the cable is intact with no cracks or damage... I just now switched on the power (unconnected to unit) squashed up the wire in all places etc to do that test and no light comes on ..... maybe it was because it is an 85w charger and I used it in a MB Air (45w charger) and some power stayed in the charger or cable after disconnecting it.... otherwise it works fine now again....

@livfe - I have two chargers in a display one is a real Apple unit and the second is a knock off! They look EXACTLY the same! You can’t tell the difference. The only way is to weigh them the lighter one is the knockoff.

@danj Give it a rest. You don't know everything, answering EVERYTHING with mostly 'answers' that should just be comments. I have been using apple stuff for how long? 25 years? I think I know by now if it would be a knock off or not. For the record, the unit has the box (matching serial) one owner from new, still the same charger.
