Viewfinder shows static screen; no settings except on display window

I just recently came to own a handycam and was able to confim it turns on. However, when trying to start operation, the viewfinder is not able to show any video, just a grey static screen like the old tvs when it would lose signal and you had to hit it a couple of times (I didnt do that for this camera).

Before attempting to open everything and having to leave a disassembled handycam with no replacement parts, I wanted to ask to see if anyone had any answers or suggestions on where to start. I have not put in a vhs tape yet, but that is my next attempt. Thanks!
