What year is the vehicle?

With the engine running, can you hear a "clunk' sound when you first turn on the AC?

You may have to stand next to the engine of the vehicle and get someone else to turn turn on the AC for you to hear it.

Does the clutch on the compressor pulley engage? You can see the clutch in the middle of the pulley and it will spin with the rest of the pulley if it is engaged. If its not engaging, you could have a low freon issue, or the compressor isnt getting signal to engage, or compressor itself could have failed. Need more info.
