The buttons don’t work
I have a kenmore air conditioner model 253.70051 and while it works fine I can’t change anything because the buttons don’t work

Could be a faulty power button tactile switch on the display/control board.
Use an Ohmmeter to check if the switch is faulty.
If it is and you can't find a replacement switch, search online for 5304536384 to find suppliers of the control board. (example only)
Seems like all the models use the same board. Check the number on the board to be sure before you order one

The control board is directly behind the control panel, so you would have to figure out how to remove the panel to gain access to it.
It may be that the actuating pin of the On/Off power button is not operating the switch on the board.
Here's an image of the board showing the switch that may help.

Where is the switch located? I'm guessing I need to access the control panel. Remove a cover?, no?

Which buttons don't work, the ones on the remote control or the buttons on the aircon control panel?
What is the full model number of the aircon unit? Asking because if replacement parts are required, there are 11 different models beginning with 253.70051xxx and they may not all be the same as far as parts are concerned. I didn't check.

Fair enough I will look when I get home, but I can tell you is it is the buttons on the panel not the remote
