Mac's not charging, even after replacing the charger's cable

When my Mac is turned off and I plug in the charger, the green light turns on first, then the orange light turns on. After a second or two, the orange light turns off, and the process repeats — green light appears again and continues cycling.

When the Mac is turned on, there is no orange light. The green light turns on briefly and then goes off and then again turns on and so on.

I replaced the charging cable, but the issue still remains. However, when I tried using my friends charger, the Mac charged normally.

I know the issue is in the power adaptor, but do i have to replace the whole adaptor or just its shoe

These Macbooks use an 85w L-Tip Magsafe charger that has the cable built into the brick. I am not sure 'How you could have replaced the cable alone'? I have learned that 'cutting a cable' from another charger and joining them may have an issue especially if the cable came from a different voltage & models charger (The correct charger for the 2012 MBP A1286 is a 85w unit). You could try using the 'shoe' of your friends charger and vice versa as that may help identify which component has developed a fault. Your friends charger obviously is working so I would source a replacement L-Tip 85w charger for you to charge your MBP safely again. If it is of any interest regarding apples charging cables have a look at this page that @danj introduced me to from my question Magsafe II Charger Cables.
