No Power on whatsoever, battery or magsafe.

Hi there,

I was using my Macbook as normal today, when it just instantly shut off. (Not like the battery had died and it would normally go into its hibernation).

I then tried to turn it back on, but it did nothing (no lights, fans etc..)

After looking at the magsafe I noticed that there was no status light on it whatsoever.

I tried my friends magsafe and it did the exactly the same thing. (As my current magsafe has a split in the insulation)

I then tested the battery voltage to see that I was getting around 11volts, and when the power button was pressed it did not dip or change at all...

When the laptop shut off it was charging, so I believe that there is sufficient charge in the battery to power on the laptop without a power adapter.

I have attempted to reset the SMC, however, because the MacBook isn't even powering on I doubt that I have successfully reset it.

I am very technically literate so I could do the repairs myself. Its just knowing what the problem is....

Thanks

Alex

Ouch... I don't like the sound of this one, but let's see what we can do.

You do say that you attempted SMC reset, but I can see why you would be unsure if it worked. Just to be sure, lets do Apple's steps:

1. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.

2. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.

3. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.

Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

______________

Now if we have a no go there, here is what I suspect and would do to check.

Almost sounds like something happened either to the logic board, or somewhere along the lines of where the power delivery systems. What has me most worried about it being the logic board is the fact no Magsafe adapters light up at all.

So my plan of action would be:

Disassemble and search for any fried parts of the logic board, while also checking to make sure all the cables and connections are nice and snug. Just make sure you follow good procedures for that in regards to static discharge, as you don't want to end up damaging anything else.

Good luck!

I had the same problem. Turned out that the issue was in the magsafe connection area. There was a staple being held in position by the magnet, preventing the magsafe connector from making contact.
