Background and Identification

The Nissan Maxima is a full-size car produced by Nissan and sold mainly in North America, China, and the Middle East. The Maxima was introduced in 1981 for the 1982 model year as the Datsun Maxima. The Nissan Maxima has its origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird, though the Datsun brand was phased out in favor of Nissan for the 1985 model year. In some markets outside of North America, the name “Maxima” has been used for the Nissan Cefiro and Teana.

The second-generation Nissan Maxima was introduced in 1984 for the 1985 model year and was the first front-wheel-drive Maxima. It was available with a 157-horsepower, 3.0-liter V6 engine, but in Japan, a smaller 2.0-liter engine was used. The Maxima was sold with either a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission. In the United States, the Maxima was classified as a compact car and was available as a four-door sedan, four-door hardtop sedan, or five-door station wagon. The second-generation was the last to be available as a station wagon.

The Nissan Maxima was updated for the 1987 model year and was available in both the “base” GL (later renamed GXE) and SE trim levels. The GL/GXE trim included digital touch entry on the driver and passenger side door panel, power windows, locks, power seats, and an optional power electronics package, among other “luxury” amenities.

Nissan Maxima vehicles include the Nissan emblem, which depicts the name “Nissan” in capital letters on a banner inside of a circle. The name “Maxima” is often included in capital letters on the left-hand side of the rear end of Maxima vehicles. The trim level is generally included on the right-hand side of the rear end of Maxima cars.
