Background
The Acer Predator was released on September 11, 2016, as a part of the Acer Predator series. The laptop is mostly designed for gamers as it is considered a gaming laptop. Improving on the Acer Predator G9-791 the G9-793 made multiple upgrades, its main key upgrades consisting of adding a Thunderbolt 3 connector, NVIDIA GTX 1070 graphics card, and G-Sync compatibility making the G9-793 a strong computer for gaming at its time. The G9-793 is powered by Intel's 7th generation core i7 processor, making the G9-793 able to handle highly demanding games and difficult tasks with ease.
While these hardware upgrades significantly boosted performance, the design remained identical to the previous generation. A huge improvement made to the design was upgrading its thermal management system. The upgrade included a better rear heat exhaust design as well as adding Acers FrostCore cooling technology. As well as adding a more refined logo the overall aesthetic design does look more polished and updated while maintaining most of the Predator series design.
The Predator 17 G9-793 featured a 17.3-inch display, available in Full HD (1920x1080) and 4K UHD (3840x2160) resolutions, providing great visual capabilities. The G9-793 also supports up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM, and users can choose between SSD and HDD storage combinations for better performance and capacity. The dual-fan cooling system, along with an optional third fan, helped manage heat during extended usage of the laptop enabling the G9-793 to last longer while also doing difficult tasks without having to stop and cool down.
At launch, the Predator 17 G9-793's base model, which included an Intel Core i7-6700HQ, GTX 1070, 16GB RAM, and 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD, was priced between $1,799 and $2,000 USD ($2,660 – $2,960 CAD). The higher-end version, featuring an i7-7820HK, GTX 1070, 32GB RAM, and 512GB SSD + 1TB HDD, ranged from $2,300 – $2,800 USD ($3,400 – $4,150 CAD). There is very little to no information on how many of these laptops were sold.
Even though the G9-793 had many key improvements in its previous generation there were still many complaints, these being the big and bulky build as well as the loud fan noise. There were no recalls or any major manufacturer fails but common complaints also included driver compatibility issues, occasional GPU throttling, and battery life. Among the fans, there were also many praises about the G9-793, the CPU and display were commonly praised by the users because of how fast the laptop could process and what it was able to display.
The Acer Predator G9-793 was not exclusive to any countries around the world. And was widely available across multiple regions, including North America, Europe, and parts of Asia.
After the life of the G9-793 the Predator Helios 500 and Helios 700 series were introduced which offered RTX-series GPUs, higher refresh rate displays, and even more advanced cooling solutions. These later models continued Acer’s line of top-quality gaming laptops, while also introducing more aggressive designs and improved portability compared to the bulky G9-793.
Identification
The Acer Predator G9-793 model number can be found on a sticker on the bottom side of the laptop. In terms of looks, the G9-793 is similar to the G9-791 the laptop is mostly black and red all over, as well as is bulkier and heavier than most laptops weighing 4.2kg with a depth of 332 mm. Like every Predator model, the lid has a Predator logo, and the ventilation and speaker grills are red or have red borders. The lid is not very stiff as Acer does not use metal, but rubberized plastic surfaces offer a lot of grip and are easy to open with one hand, but are more likely to leave hard-to-clean fingerprints. The keyboard keys are all black with the WASD and arrow keys standing out as red, likely due to most games being them for movement.
