Background Information

The COTTONMOUTH-I, also abbreviated as the CM-I, is a covert USB device that is disguised as a standard USB cable, designed and produced by the National Security Agency (NSA). The device was announced in the ANT Catalog and made available in January 2009 and cost $20,000 for 50 cables.

The cable allows for covert data collection and exfiltration through a USB 1.1 FS hub and HOWLERMONKEY RF Transmitter concealed within the USB-A connector. This design has also inspired the creation of the O.MG Cable by Hak5.
