Background and Identification
Electrophoresis is a method used in laboratories for DNA, RNA, and protein analysis. The method functions by suspending the compound to be tested in a fluid with a uniform electric field applied across it. The force provided by the electric field, counteracted by the friction forces from the fluid (which is greater for larger molecules), allows lab technicians to separate molecules based on size, charge, or binding affinity. Electrophoresis is also known as cataphoresis when the subjects tested are positively charged and anaphoresis when the molecules are negatively charged.
