Background and Identification
The Ilco Orion KD50C is a semi-automatic key duplicating machine. Key duplication refers to the process of creating a key based on an existing key. Key cutting involves placing a flat key into a vise in a cutting machine with a blank attached to a parallel bise, and the original key is moved along a guide while the blank is moved against a wheel, which cuts the new key. The KD50C can duplicate standard type residential, commercial, padlock, and automotive keys without any adapters.
The KD50C features wide-spaced vise jaws that are designed to accommodate longer blade keys and large bowhead keys. The ratchet-style vise jaws include two positions to grip cylinder keys and double-sided thin blades. The key cutter’s motor activation is automatically controlled by raising and lowering the carriage. Its spring-loaded key gauge automatically releases as the carriage is raised. The spring-loaded carriage is designed to provide consistent cutting pressure which reduces the potential for miss-cuts. The cutter uses micrometer regulation knobs for depth and spacing adjustments. A built-in light illuminates the cutter’s working area and a cobalt steel cutter ensures clean cuts.
An On/Off switch and deburring brush button are located on the left side of the cutter. It includes a mostly grey body with a blue top cover and a transparent blue shield that can be lowered to prevent debris from spreading. The KD50C weighs 61 pounds and includes a 0.25-horsepower electric motor that operates at 1725 revolutions per minute off of a 110-Volt electrical outlet.
