Background and Identification
Luminometers are specifically designed photometers, an instrument that measures the strength of light (ranging from ultraviolet to infrared), which are capable of measuring extremely small amounts of light. This allows the instrument to pick up on the weakest of emissions, particularly useful for the observation of bioluminescence and chemiluminescence. The luminometer is notably used in the testing of ATP concentrations, as a solution with unknown ATP saturation can be combined with the naturally occurring firefly enzyme luciferase and the light emitted measured.
