Disassembling Garbage Disposal

    • Operation Test: Run the disposal to check for specific symptoms like unusual sounds or tripping of the overload protector (reset button).

    • Observation: Pay close attention to the type of noise and any response from the overload protector.

    • Installation Check: Confirm that the disposal is properly installed as per the manufacturer's guidelines.

    • Voltage Verification: Check the voltage supply to the disposal using a voltmeter. The standard range should be between 108 and 132 volts.

    • Position a bucket or towels under the disposal to catch any residual water.

    • Disconnecting Lines: Remove the drain line and, if applicable, the dishwasher drain hose.

    • Unlocking Process: Use a service wrench to rotate the mounting flange counterclockwise, carefully supporting the disposal to prevent it from falling.

    • Place the disposal upside down on a sturdy surface.

    • Depending on the model, remove the outer shell and segregate the disposal into its main parts: hopper, drain housing, rotor/shaft assembly, stator, and lower-end bell.

    • Label each wire and part for easy reassembly.

    • Hopper Examination: Look for cracks or corrosion, especially near connections.

    • Gasket Inspection: Check for damage on gaskets and O-rings, replacing them if needed.

    • Switch and Rotor Check: Test the centrifugal switch’s movement and inspect the rotor for wear.

    • Electrical Testing: Use a multimeter to test the capacitor, windings, and switches. For the capacitor, observe the meter as it charges and discharges. Check stator windings for continuity and inspect the start switch for open circuits.
