When you plug in your ethernet cable do you see lights on the port? Check the device manager to make sure your laptop sees the port and confirm that it's not in some weird driver error state. That is definitely LCD damage. Damage like this can be caused by pressure such as when it's in a back pack. The only fix is to replace the LCD, which in this case it fused to the glass/digitizer.
