ASUS D550MA-DS01 Troubleshooting
Here you will find a list of possible problems that one may encounter when using this device. Each of these guidelines will explain possible causes along with possible solutions to your problem.
- Laptop will not power on
- Laptop gets extremely hot
- DVD / CD Drive will not read disks
- DVD / CD Drive will not open
- Blue Screen of Death
- Keyboard is not working properly
- Touchpad is not working
- Laptop will not connect to the internet or has a bad connection
"Pressing the power button or opening the laptop will not power on the device."
Your computer may be able to power on, but it seems like it can't because the display might be disabled . The screen may have been disabled through a key shortcut. Press the key combination "fn + F7". If the display does not come on, proceed to the next test.
Plug the power adapter in and attempt to turn on the computer. If the computer turns on with the power adapter connected but doesn't turn on when its not connected, then your battery may need to be charged. Allow the battery to charge for up to 3 hours. If it still cannot hold a charge unplugged, then you may need to replace your battery.
If the adapter has a light, plug it into the outlet. If the light does not turn on, then you know that the adapter does not work and needs to be replaced.
"While in use, the laptop gets extremely hot to the touch and hot air is coming out of the vents. Performance, such as CPU speed or random restarts, may or may not be affected."
Soft surfaces that may conform to the bottom of the laptop will block the laptop ventilation ports and cause overheating. Laptops are usually not supposed to sit in your lap or bed for extended periods of time. To remedy problems that may be caused by this, be sure to set your laptop on a hard, flat surface so that the ventilation slots are not blocked. If the ventilation slots are covered, heat will buildup and can cause damage.
Over time, dust will accumulate in the ventilation port and on the fans. It is important to ensure that your laptop is clean and clear of any blockage.
After ensuring that the laptop's ventilation is not blocked and the inside is clear of dust, your fan may be broken. You can see if the fan is operational by listening for the whirring sound of the fan. If you cannot hear the fan, it may need to be replaced. You can also feel the vents to see if there is air coming out, although laptop fans usually do not blow a lot of air.
Older batteries are known to run hotter. You can check to see if the heat is coming from the battery or other parts of the laptop. If the area of the battery pack is hot, the laptop has trouble holding a charge, and the ventilation has been cleaned, then consider replacing the battery.
"When the user places a CD or DVD into the optical drive, an issue occurs in such a way that the disk cannot be read."
The disk that you are using may be scratched, smudged, or damaged in some way. To test if it is the disk that you are using, try using another disk known to work. You can also try that disk in a different DVD / CD player. You can also clean and rebuff a moderately scratched disk and restore it to full use. If the disk you are using is known to work in other players, you may need to replace the DVD / CD Drive. Please see our guide on how to replace the disk drive.
"The drive does not open when the user presses the EJECT button on the drive. "
If pressing the button does not open the disk drive, the operating system may be busy trying to execute a task. Try to wait several minutes for the task to complete and press the button again. If the disk drive still does not open, restart the computer.
If restart does not fix the issue, run a virus scanner to ensure that you do not have a virus on your computer. If you do have a virus, please follow the instructions provided by your virus scanner or do a check on the internet for a solution. The range of possible virus issues for a computer is too high and beyond the scope of this guide.
If your computer's operating system is running fine and power is running to your drive, then the drive may be damaged. Please follow our guide on how to replace the drive.
"The fabled blue screen of death, or BSoD, has occurred."
If your laptop received the blue screen of death and your laptop is very hot, you need to let your computer cool off. If the overheating is due to bad ventilation or a bad fan, look above for the solution to these problems.
If you continue to get the BSoD, then your memory may need to be re-seated. Removing the memory and re-installing it may remedy this issue. Because touching the memory can damage it, you must take extra care when dealing with memory.
If re-seating the memory does not resolve the BSoD, you may need to replace the memory. First you should start by trying new RAM to see if it solves the problem.
It is possible that you have an error with your hard drive. Running "fdisk" in the command prompt can both check if there are any corrupt sectors to your hard drive and fix those issues. If "fdisk" cannot fix these problems, then it is possible that your hard drive needs to be replaced.
"When typing on the keyboard, some or all of the keys are unresponsive."
If you have not cleaned your keyboard in a while, your keyboard may be clogged with debris from general use. This debris can block connections to keys on your keyboard, leaving said key unresponsive when pressed. If you suspect your keyboard is clogged or overly dirty, use a PC duster to blow all of the dirt out. If the dirt is really bad, consider taking the laptop apart and replacing the keyboard or cleaning it separately. If you wish to remove the keyboard, follow our guide here.
If your keyboard is clean and it is still having problems, there may be broken elements in your keyboard. You may need to replace the entire keyboard module. In this case, please follow our guide here to replace the keyboard.
"When using the touchpad, it is unresponsive or the buttons do not work."
It is possible that your touchpad has been disabled. Try pressing the key combination "fn + F9" to re-enable your touchpad.
Verify that your computer recognizes the touchpad by checking the Device Manager screen. Press the Windows button to bring up the start menu and type Device Manager. Select the Device Manager option and use the tab and arrow keys to navigate the window. Verify that there are no unrecognized devices.
"When the laptop tries to connect to WiFi, there is either no signal or internet connection."
You may have tried to connect to a network that you do not have access to. Please verify that you are connecting to the correct network.
It is possible that you have entered incorrect settings for your network. Please check with the system administrator for the proper connection settings or check the manual to your WiFi access point on home networks.
If you are using WiFi and are far away from the router that supplies the signal, you may have a bad connection. Moving closer will help your connection run more smoothly. If you are using your own network, try placing your WiFi access point on the same floor that your laptop will usually be used on. WiFi access points tend to be designed for use on a single floor and have dead zones above and below them.
If you cannot connect to WiFi and you know your WiFi is enabled, you likely have a problem with your network card. In this case, it may need to be replaced.
