Gateway LT4004u Troubleshooting
This laptop was released in 2012 and is the model LT4004u.
Computer Will Not Turn On
You have trouble powering your computer.
The Battery is Non-Functioning
This device uses a lithium battery which can be replaced. Remove the battery following this battery replacement guide. Insert the new battery without turning on the computer. Connect the AC adapter and fully charge the battery. Disconnect the AC adapter and turn on the computer to use. Fully deplete the battery use before recharging fully again.
Faulty Power Cord
If the battery is working but the power cord will not connect properly, you may need to purchase a new power cord.
The screen on your Gateway LT4004u is unresponsive.
If the screen remains frozen for several minutes, turn the computer off and then restart it. A low battery may cause the screen to freeze more frequently. If the battery is low, charge the computer using the power cord.
If screen is damaged beyond repair, replace the screen following the screen replacement guide.
While using your computer, the temperature within the device increases to a point to where the device can no longer function.
Dust or Dirt within Device
An overheated computer could indicate that there is debris within the device causing the temperature to increase. Use a compressed air duster to blow off dust or dirt from the vents and fan.
Turn the computer off and let cool. After the laptop has cooled, restart the device and resume use.
You have trouble typing when using your computer.
If a key is projected too far outward or stuck in a compressed position, there may be something underneath the key causing the problem. In order to fix this, remove the key following this key replacement guide. Clean beneath the key and remove any debris that may be in the way. Once the board is clean, push the key back into place.
If a key is missing, you can replace it by following this key replacement guide.

Windows 7 has an administrator account with an empty password. Press F8 to go to safe mode and login without password.

You have trouble listening to sounds on your computer.
Loose Headphone Jack
Test audio through the computer speakers, then test it using headphones. If the audio is only distorted while listening via headphones, the audio jack or the headphones themselves may be faulty. Audio that cuts in and out is often a sign of a loose audio jack, so make sure the audio jack is fully inserted in the computer.
If the audio sound is distorted when listening through the laptop’s speakers, the audio driver may be corrupt. Search for Gateway LT4004u. Click “Gateway LT4004u,” then click “Drivers & Software.” Click the “Audio” tab and select and download the appropriate driver. Go to Control Panel -> Device Manager -> Sound Controllers. Click on your sound card and click “Update driver.” Select your updated driver, then restart the computer.
Memory/ Storage Problems
You have trouble saving material using the device.
Hard Drive Malfunction
If the hard drive has been damaged, it could be causing significant memory problems. You can replace it following the hard drive replacement guide.
The Gateway LT4004u comes with 1GB of RAM, however, if needed, the RAM can be upgraded to 2GB. The 2GB RAM is available on Amazon.

Failure to Connect to Wifi
Your Gateway LT4004u is not connecting to wireless internet.
In order to solve connections between your laptop and router usually resetting the router will suffice. To do so shut off the router and unplug the electrical cords. Leave the router unplugged for at least thirty seconds for the router to refresh itself before plugging it back in and turning it back on.
Wifi is Not Enabled
To enable your Wifi and access the internet begin by clicking the “Start” menu and click the “Control Panel.” Next click Network and Internet Connections, go to Network Connection and click “Network and Sharing Center” from the Control Panel and then click “Manage Wireless Connections.” You should now see your wireless connection.
Soft resets can also refresh the connection between the router and modem. To do so unplug the Ethernet cable connecting the router and modem together. After waiting a few seconds, plug the Ethernet cable back in and check your internet connection.
Computer Running Slow
You have trouble loading material or navigating the device.
Limited Battery Charge
If the product is plugged in to charge but is not charging, click start and type device in the search bar, then select Device Manager. Expand the batteries category. Select disable and wait 2-3 minutes and enable it again.
