Laptop Not Booting

The laptop powers on but does not boot past the Gateway logo.

External Devices Attached

Check ports for external devices and ensure that there is nothing there. If a flash drive or SD card is attached, it could be stalling the laptop boot. Remove external devices and restart laptop normally.

Restarting

Turn your laptop completely off and unplug from the charger. Allow to sit for a minute before turning back on. When turning laptop back on, press Fn and F6 (Jyotimoy). This should prompt the laptop to boot.

Battery Health

The well being of the laptop’s battery could also be affecting the ability to boot properly. This can be fixed by simply replacing the battery. Follow this ++guide++in order to do so.

Recovery Reset

According to the manufacturer, Acer, hold the power key for 5 seconds to power off your laptop entirely. Turn the laptop back on and as the laptop powers back on, immediately hold the ALT button while pressing the F10 button. This will prompt the restore feature for the laptop and a blue screen should appear with the words “Choose an Option”. Select Troubleshoot. Then select Reset this PC. Choose your preferred recovery process, either “Keep my files” or “Remove everything”. Click Next and follow the following instructions to complete the resetting of the computer. Your computer should boot normally.

Corrupt Motherboard

Older laptops can result in a damaged or corrupt motherboard after years of use and/or damage caused from spills or dropping the device (Hemoore). This could be causing the laptop to not boot up properly. The motherboard will need to be replaced and can be done following this ++guide++.

Display Frozen or Unresponsive

Screen appears blank when power is turned on.

Monitor Display Is Too Dark

Check your monitor display settings by using the brightness keys. They are located on the top row of your keyboard.

Bad Graphic Card

If your graphics card is bad, the device will fail to display on both internal and external monitors. Follow these steps to find out if you need a new Graphics Card:

  1. Connect an HDMI cord to the port on the left side of the device.
  2. Connect the other end of the HDMI cord to an external screen.
  3. If both screens remain blank, then the graphics card on the device needs to be changed: Video Card Guide.

If the external monitor displays your device’s screen, then there is a problem with your LCD screen. If this is the case, follow this link: LCD guide.

Old Graphic Card Driver

If you are running an old Graphics Card Driver, it could be the reason behind your blank screen. Follow these steps to update your driver:

  1. Click the start button, located in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  2. Search “Device Manager.”
  3. Click Device Manager in the window
  4. Double click “Display Adapters;” your device’s name should appear directly below.
  5. Right click on your device’s name and choose uninstall from the list.

Use the following link to install the latest Graphics Card Driver on your device: ++Gateway website++.

Red Screen

The display turns red following initial system startup.

Display Malfunction

Attempt a forced restart. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds and then release. It is normal for the screen to flash during this process; continue holding the power button until the full 30 seconds is up.

Faulty Graphics Card

Some users have reported fixing the problem after switching back to their default graphics card driver. Follow this 4-step process (Windows Report):

  1. In the Search bar type “Device Manager.” Click the application that pops up.
  2. Find “Display adapters" and click the arrow to the left of it. Your device’s name should appear directly below. Right click on your device’s name and choose Uninstall from the list.
  3. Click the box that says "Delete the driver software for this device” and then click “Uninstall.

After the current driver has been removed, restart your computer. Go to the manufacture’s website (++Gateway website++), find your model number, and download the latest drivers.

OSD Software

Some users reported that the OSD Software on Windows 10 was the cause of their red screen issues. To remove OSD software from your computer, follow these instructions:

  1. Click the Windows Start button in the bottom left corner of your screen.
  2. Click the settings button.  ''
  3. Once the Settings application opens, click “Apps.”
  4. Click “Apps & features,” which is located in the panel to the left. Locate softOSD on the list and click the uninstall button.

Laptop Not Charging

Device charger is plugged in but will not charge.

Check Outlet

When you plug in the charger to your laptop, make sure the charger is plugged into the wall socket. Make sure that the wall socket you plug into is operational.

Faulty AC Adapter

When you plug in your charger to the laptop and the wall socket but the computer still won't charge, you should check your AC adapter. According to an iFixit forum, it is suggested that you check the AC adapter with a multi-meter. The barrel connector on the adapter should read 19 volts.

Damaged DC Jack

If the barrel connected reads 19 volts, you will need to disassemble the computer and measure the DC Jack with a multi-meter. It should also read 19 volts. If both the AC adapter and DC jack don't read anything on the multi-meter and the battery status light does not show up, you will need to remove the battery and replace it completely. See our ++guide++ to replace the battery.

Laptop Not Playing Audio

Device does not play audio when it is not muted and volume is up.

Disabled Audio

Check to ensure that the volume is entirely up on the device while troubleshooting audio. Also make certain that the device is not muted. The audio can also be disabled in other settings, so check the following menus to ensure the audio is enabled. The BIOS (Basic Input Output System) menu can be accessed during boot up after restarting your laptop. During the boot up process, press and hold the F10 key as soon as it starts to boot up until the BIOS menu opens. In the BIOS menu you can ensure that the system audio is turned on. After changing any of the settings, restart your device again. Additionally, try the System Settings, go to the Control Panel, then Hardware and Sound, and then Sound. Go to Adjust System Volume and ensure the sound is turned up. Also try to go to Manage Audio Devices and check that the speakers are enabled.

Corrupted/Incorrect Driver

Open the Windows Control Panel, go to the Hardware and Sound, and then go to the Device Manager. Check to see if a driver is installed. If there is not a driver or if the driver is the incorrect driver, go to the Gateway website then download and install the correct driver for your sound card.

Failing Sound Card

If the correct driver is installed and the device’s audio systems are all enabled but there is still no audio, your sound card may have failed. If that is the case, you will have to replace it.
